A more personal way of teaching, friendly faces and a great place for learning – a month with The Learning Foundry

We wanted to give a welcome to Adam, one of the newest members of our team as we continue to grow and deliver bigger and better training programmes for people locally and nationally.

So, say hello to Adam Swain, our new hospitality and catering Development Coach. After working as a chef for over 15 years, serving famous faces like David Beckham, and teaching in local colleges and schools, we’re excited for him to share his wealth of experience with our learners and join the TLF team!

Here’s what Adam had to say about his first month at The Learning Foundry:

“The Learning Foundry felt like something exciting and different. I’ve worked in colleges for a long time so teaching somewhere like this is something I have never done before.

I’m looking forward to seeing ‘instant wins’ for my learners. The 12-week course structure is a new way or working for me, and it will be so rewarding to see my students succeed so regularly – and rapidly!

It’s a more personal way of teaching. Smaller class sizes mean I can really get to know the people who I am teaching, the whole process is more personal than a traditional learning environment. Already I am finding it easier to communicate with learners, and I think that makes me and them feel a lot more relaxed.

It’s a foot in the door, not just for hospitality. The hospitality and catering course with The Learning Foundry is so transferable. Learners take units in teamwork and problem-solving alongside catering-specific training such as food safety.

There is a wide range of skills to learn, and people don’t realise the wealth of job opportunities there are for people within hospitality and catering. People who have the skills it takes to work in the hospitality industry are employable across multiple different sectors.

It can take you anywhere, from holiday parks to cruise ships. You get opportunities to learn about so many different cultures when you have the basic skills right.

There is so much I am looking forward to showing the learners. I’m passionate about introducing physical cooking lessons to the course. I know that The Learning Foundry have great links with a lot of local businesses, so I am hoping with the support of our network we can make this happen.

I’ve worked in some amazing places. I trained in a French brasserie and have been a chef in restaurants serving celebrities like Coronation Street stars and the Beckhams. I’ve cooked some pretty fancy things, too, lobsters being one of the most notable. My favourite things to cook, though are proper hearty meals like stews and casseroles – I’m looking forward to sharing these with the learners!

The Learning Foundry is a great place for learners, no one is left behind or lost. Everyone knows of each other, even if they’re not directly involved with one another, there is no anonymity. There’s a great sense of community.

Everyone is a familiar face, the atmosphere is relaxed for everyone. All the staff have been so friendly, it feels like I’ve been here for ages!”

Well, Adam, we hope this is just the start!
