Bringing education and business together at the Liverpool City Region Skills Hub Conference

The Liverpool City Regional Careers Hub Conference (22nd November 2022) brought together education and businesses to share knowledge and best practice in secondry school careers guidance.

Guest speaker, Oli de Botton, Chief Executive of the Careers & Enterprise Company opened the event, and talked about the importance of raising aspirations and looking after young people's social and emotional wellbeing though "high impact" careers programmes. He said: "Getting young people and employers together expands the students' social network that they may not have access to" - and we couldn't agree more.

The Liverpool City Region Careers Hub is part of the Government’s Careers Strategy implemented nationally to support secondary schools and colleges in implementing a ‘world class’ standard of careers guidance. Regional careers hubs were set up by The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) to improve careers education and help prepare young people for the world of work. The annual conference was a chance for networking with careers leads, teachers, enterprise advisors and employers to further the great work in this area.

One of our highlights was a walk through of the new LCR Be More portal - a one stop shop for jobs, careers and training across the region. You can find our appretniceship vacancies on there already with more opportunities coming very soon.

Another highlight was the student panel, with young people from Kings Leadership Academy, Cavendish Academy, Maghull High School and City of Liverpool College alongside our apprentices Susie, Jamie-Leigh and George. They spoke directly to schools and employers about routes into work and talent recruitment and shared lots of great advice and wise words about their own experiences.

Susie said: I had a amazing time yesterday at the conference with The Careers & Enterprise Company and Growth Platform. I got to speak about equality and diversity in front of Headteachers, Careers Leads and employers! I wanted to challenge the processes of employment and education in terms of neurodivergency, sexuality, gender, race and other circumstances that aren't protected by the equality act such as care leavers, household income, postcode, young carers and more.

"Everyone should be given the resources and opportunities catered to them to thrive and succeed,  and too often people get left behind through education and employment. It is our job to not let this happen. We must do more to support young people in such a crucial time in their lives, to be able to succeed with confidence in their next steps."

We're proud to be part of The Regenda Group. As a group of businesses, we regenerate places and work with people to create the opportunities they need to thrive. We know that regular, meaningful encounters with employers is a vital part of preparing and inspiring young people for the world of work.

As one of the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Cornerstone Employers, we are committed to working together with our networks, the wider business community and schools and colleges to make this happen. It’s all about bringing education and business together to create the jobs that our region needs to grow and prosper.

Thanks to all the team at the Liverpool City Region Careers Hub for a fantastic event. We left feeling more inspired than ever to make talent shine!
